Egypt has repatriated 2,635 nationals from Libya since the start of 2025 as part of efforts to protect its citizens abroad, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.
The returnees included 1,132 people from Tripoli and western Libya, and more than 1,500 from Benghazi and eastern Libya, the ministry said.
Egypt has been increasing coordination with Libyan authorities to locate citizens reported missing or detained by their families, according to the statement.
The ministry said the repatriations reflect Egypt’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals amid persistent challenges linked to illegal migration and weak security conditions in Libya.
Libya remains a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, while Egypt has intensified efforts to curb irregular migration through a national strategy aimed at preventing its territory from being used as a transit route.
Last week, 14 Egyptians died when a migrant boat sank en route from Libya to Greece.
