FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Tunisian coast guards recovered eight bodies and rescued 29 migrants after a boat sank off the coast of Sfax province, the Tunisian National Guard said Monday.

The rescue operation, conducted jointly with the Tunisian Navy, began Sunday morning after a distress call from a sailor reported the sinking. The search for additional missing persons is ongoing, though the exact number remains unclear.

Three survivors were transported to Sfax University Hospital for urgent medical care, and legal procedures have been initiated. The migrants, from sub-Saharan Africa and other nationalities, were attempting to cross the Mediterranean, a major transit route for those seeking to reach Europe.

Tunisia has become a key departure point for migrants, replacing Libya as a primary route. The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by those undertaking perilous sea journeys in search of a better life.
