Syria has signed the final document for a power‑grid rehabilitation project with the World Bank, marking the institution’s first initiative in the country in nearly four decades, Finance Minister Mohamed Yisr Barnieh said.

Barnieh said the project is funded through a grant rather than a loan and will support government efforts, particularly those of the Ministry of Energy, to improve electricity supply and strengthen the economy.

In June, the minister announced that the World Bank’s Board of Directors had approved a $146 million grant to rehabilitate electricity transmission lines in Syria.

He said additional grant‑funded projects are being prepared in cooperation with the bank across several sectors and are expected to be announced over the coming year.

Syria’s electricity network has been severely damaged by years of conflict, causing prolonged blackouts and leaving many areas with only a few hours of power daily.

The state‑owned system continues to struggle with damaged infrastructure, fuel shortages and rising demand. Rehabilitation projects focusing on transmission lines and substations aim to restore services and connectivity.
