EU must remain united on energy security amid geopolitical instability, Cyprus official says

The European Union needs unity to safeguard its energy security in the face of geopolitical crises, Cyprus’ Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna told the European Parliament during a debate this week.

Representing the Council of the EU, Raouna said there is currently no immediate threat to Europe’s energy supply, but warned that the situation remains unstable and requires preparation for possible deterioration.

Addressing rising energy prices, she said there is “no simple or quick solution,” noting that the European Commission and member states are examining targeted, temporary and financially sustainable measures to ease pressure on households and industry.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen also stressed the need to strengthen the bloc’s energy independence, saying the Commission is taking targeted steps to protect citizens and the economy.
