Fire at Nicosia Prison, inmates evacuated

A fire broke out around 10:15 p.m. Sunday in a maximum‑security wing of the Central Prisons, authorities said.

Preliminary reports indicate three inmates deliberately set fire to their cells and the corridor of the wing, which houses 10 prisoners. The blaze burned mattresses and caused smoke damage.

Prison staff acted immediately, evacuating all inmates safely. Firefighters responded and extinguished the flames. No prisoners were injured, officials said. One staff member was taken to a hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.

The inmates have been temporarily moved to another wing. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
