FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that France will officially recognise the State of Palestine during September’s 80th United Nations General Assembly.
The declaration marks a significant shift in France’s position amid growing calls for peace in the region.
In a message posted to his official X account, Macron stressed the “urgent need to end the war in Gaza and rescue the civilian population,” calling for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid.
He added that France’s recognition of Palestine would aim to contribute to the region’s stability: “We must build the State of Palestine… ensure its viability… and, through its demilitarisation and recognition of Israel, support the security of all in the Middle East.”
Macron also sent a formal letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, stating his continued support for a two-state solution and the need to end violence and terrorism.
