The German Social Democrats (SPD) confirmed incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz as their candidate for chancellor in the February elections at their party conference on Saturday, as expected, according to German media, including Deutsche Welle and Die Zeit .
The choice was almost unanimous, with only a few party conference delegates opposing Scholz’s continuation.
In his speech, Olaf Scholz said Germany was at a crossroads. He called for fair wages, affordable housing and stable pensions for “ordinary people.” Scholz saw his party’s main opponent, the Christian Democrats (CDU), as only serving the interests of the richest tenth.
Early federal elections will be held in Germany on February 23rd.
