Germany’s upper house of parliament on Friday approved legislation banning the purchase and possession of nitrous oxide by people under 18, citing its growing use as a party drug.
The law, passed by the Bundestag in November, also prohibits online sales and vending machine purchases of nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas. Officials said the measure aims to curb health risks among minors, including loss of consciousness and possible long‑term damage to the nervous system.
The legislation also imposes stricter controls on gamma‑butyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4‑butanediol (BDO), chemicals linked to so‑called “knockout drops” that can be used to facilitate sexual assault and robbery.
The new rules are scheduled to take effect in April 2026.
