Cyprus’ population grew to 983,000 at the end of 2024, up 1.7% from a year earlier, the country’s Statistical Service has revealed.

Children under 15 made up 15.2% of the population, while those 65 and older accounted for 18.3%, underscoring a steady aging trend compared with 2000, when the shares were 22.3% and 11.3% respectively.

Births fell to 9,766 from 10,241 in 2023, with the crude birth rate at 10 per 1,000 residents.

The fertility rate remained at 1.4, far below the replacement level of 2.1. The average age of mothers at first birth was 30.4 years, and 31.6 years across all births.

Deaths totaled 6,753, little changed from 2023.

Life expectancy rose to 81.4 years for men and 85.8 for women. Infant mortality dropped to 3 deaths per 1,000 live births, down from 4.5 a year earlier.

Net migration was positive at 13,588. Arrivals numbered 40,471, while 26,883 people left the country.

Marriages declined to 10,334 from 11,766 in 2023, with both religious and civil ceremonies falling.

Of 6,533 civil marriages, only 1,908 were between Cyprus residents.

Divorces edged down to 2,107 from 2,134, with the crude divorce rate at 2.16 per 1,000 residents.

The Statistical Service said demographic data for 2012–2022 were revised following the 2021 census.
