Germany’s Verdi union calls nationwide public transport strike for Monday

Germany’s Verdi union on Friday called for nationwide strikes that will disrupt local public transport services next Monday, escalating pressure on employers amid stalled talks over pay and working conditions.

The walkouts will hit municipal transport companies across the country, with many cities expected to see major service suspensions. Verdi said nearly 100,000 employees at about 150 operators are covered by the action.

The union is seeking shorter weekly working hours, reduced shift lengths, longer rest periods and higher bonuses for night and weekend work. In several federal states, the negotiations also include demands for wage increases.

The strike comes as Germany faces a wave of labor unrest. On Thursday, around 12,000 teachers and education workers staged a nationwide walkout for higher pay, disrupting universities, research institutes and state schools in several major cities.
