The Gulf of Mexico is recognized and has been registered as such by international institutions, said Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Mexican president made the remarks in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” a name he said has a “beautiful ring to it.”
Sheinbaum addressed the topic at the press conference, saying, “Obviously, the Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations by that name.”
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum reaffirmed her willingness to collaborate with the incoming U.S. government on trade, security, and migration, as well as in the fight against drug trafficking and arms, while always “defending our sovereignty.” ■
