The Consumer Protection Service has released the January 2025 Consumer Product Price Observatory, revealing mixed trends in the prices of 250 basic consumer products across Cyprus.
The observatory, which tracks daily sales data from 400 retail stores, aims to provide an objective comparison of prices for consumers.
According to the report, the inflation rate remained steady at 2.5%, similar to December’s 2.6%.
Notable price increases were observed in the “food and non-alcoholic beverages” category, which rose by 4.8%, and “restaurants and hotels,” which saw a 4.1% increase.
In contrast, the “clothing and footwear” category experienced a significant 13.0% decrease, and “food and non-alcoholic beverages” fell by 2.43%, primarily due to a 6.1% drop in agricultural product prices.
The observatory highlighted price changes across 45 categories of basic products, with 26 categories recording increases and 18 categories seeing decreases. One category remained unchanged.
Significant price increases compared to the previous month included:
- Frozen fish: +16.3%
- Bagels: +11.2%
- Frozen mollusks/shellfish: +8.2%
- Flour: +8.0%
- Baby food: +6.0%
- Cypriot coffee: +6.3%
- Oil: +5.8%
- Vegetable cooking fat: +4.4%
- Rice: +3.3%
- Juices: +3.2%
- Bourgouri: +3.1%
On the other hand, notable price decreases were observed in:
- Sugar: -16.8%
- Vegetables and greens: -7.5%
- Fresh meat: -5.5%
- Cheeses: -3.4%
- Fresh fish and mollusks: -3.3%
- Cold cuts: -2.5%
- Laundry detergents: -1.7%
- Baby diapers: -1.6%
- Sanitary napkins: -1.5%
- Bread: -1.4%
