Efforts to strengthen Cyprus’ new digital television standard will begin early next week, aiming to sharply reduce the widespread signal‑reception problems that emerged after the transition to the Hellas Sat platform.
Speaking at an emergency session of parliament’s Transport Committee, Deputy Minister for Innovation Nikodimos Damianou said the government is considering support measures for households that faced unexpected costs.
He stressed officials did not downplay the disruption and acknowledged they failed to anticipate its scale.
Damianou said authorities reinstated parallel broadcasting of the previous signal for three months to ease the transition.
He added the shift to the new platform was unavoidable: the old system had operated for 15 years, could no longer accept upgrades, and its license had expired — leaving Cyprus as the last EU country still using the outdated standard.
