New Cyprus Legislation on Recreational Boats Still Unimplemented Six Months On

Revised legislation governing recreational boating in Cyprus remains unimplemented, six months after it was passed by parliament last February.

Prompted in part by a recent accident off Protaras in which two people were seriously injured, the Deputy Director of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Kyriakos Aliouris, says that the aim was to bring the new legislation into force as soon as possible.

He added that from September, the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, working alongside other relevant authorities, would begin developing procedures and preparing the associated forms.

Mr Aliouris said the Recreational Navigation Law of 2026 would be introduced in stages, given that its new provisions contained many aspects still requiring detailed work.

On the same matter, the parliamentary spokesman for DISY, Dimitris Dimitriou, who sat on the Transport Committee during discussion of the bill, said parliament had mishandled the legislation by failing to include a specific implementation timetable within the law itself.

Mr Dimitriou also said the bill had been brought before parliament without prior public consultation, meaning that a compromise acceptable to all interested parties had had to be sought during the sittings of the parliamentary Transport Committee.
