Three tourists from New Zealand discovered the hard way that swimming in the Trevi Fountain is strictly prohibited.

One of them has been banned for life after taking a second dip.

The tourists were stopped by police on Sunday as they waded into the world-famous fountain.

While being escorted away, one of the tourists broke free and jumped back into the fountain.

“There was definitely alcohol involved,” a Rome police spokesman told CNN.

The man was fined 500 euros and received a lifetime ban from the landmark.

The Trevi Fountain, built in 1762, gained worldwide fame after actress Anita Ekberg bathed in it in Federico Fellini’s 1960 film “La Dolce Vita.” Since then, numerous tourists have attempted to recreate the iconic scene.
