FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday, signaling that the first round of voting in the papal conclave did not produce a new pope.
The 133 cardinals with voting rights gathered in Rome following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88.
The conclave, a centuries-old tradition, will continue Thursday with a second round of voting.
Most papal elections in the last century have concluded within a few days, with no conclave lasting more than a week since the 1830s.
