FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — The Norwegian government recently announced the launch of Longship, a large-scale carbon capture and storage initiative aimed at reducing industrial emissions.

The project involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) at Heidelberg Materials’ cement plant in Brevik, located 60 kilometers south of Oslo, and later expanding operations to Hafslund Celsio’s waste-to-energy facility in the capital.

Norwegian Minister of Energy Terje Aasland called the initiative a “technological breakthrough” in decarbonization, emphasizing its potential impact beyond Norway’s borders.

The captured CO₂ will be transported by ship to a terminal in Oygarden, near Bergen, where it will be injected and stored 2,600 meters beneath the seabed. The first CO₂ shipment arrived at the facility in early June, with injections set to begin in August.

Longship represents Norway’s largest-ever climate investment, with total costs estimated at 34 billion Norwegian kroner (3.4 billion U.S. dollars) over ten years.
