The Health Insurance Organization (OAY) is reminding Gesy beneficiaries that personal data collected at pharmacies must be handled discreetly, following a related notice issued by the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection.

In a written statement, the OAY said pharmacists should collect identification details in a way that protects patients’ privacy and confidentiality.

For prescription processing, the organization is advising beneficiaries to follow several practices: avoid stating personal information such as ID numbers or birth dates within earshot of others; show only the necessary parts of their ID card; write required details on paper or a mobile device and destroy or take the note afterward; use the prescription number; and use the barcode available through the Gesy Beneficiary Portal.

Beneficiaries who observe their personal data being spoken aloud within hearing distance of others, or who notice pharmacy practices that violate privacy rules, may report the issue to the Gesy service center at 17000.
