FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – March 8, 1965, marks a pivotal moment in the history of Cyprus as the nation officially adopted its national flag.

This milestone came five years after Cyprus gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960, symbolizing the country’s newfound identity and aspirations as a sovereign state.

The design of the flag is both unique and deeply symbolic. At its center is a map of the island rendered in copper-orange, a color that pays homage to Cyprus’s rich history of copper mining. In fact, the very name “Cyprus” is believed to be derived from “cuprum,” the Latin word for copper, underscoring the integral role this resource has played in shaping the island’s legacy.

Beneath the map lie two olive branches, a timeless symbol of peace. These olive branches were included to emphasize the hope for harmony and reconciliation between the two primary communities of the island: Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. At the time of its creation, Cyprus was navigating the complexities of establishing its identity as an independent nation amidst regional tensions.

The flag’s neutral design was a deliberate choice. By avoiding the use of symbols or colors traditionally associated with either Greece or Turkey, the creators sought to embody the principles of unity and inclusivity.
