In a significant and unexpected turn of events, around 1,200 Syrians have withdrawn their asylum applications, and an additional 500 have requested the revocation of their subsidiary protection status in Cyprus. This trend is a clear indicator of the shifting landscape following the fall of ex-president Bashar al-Assad in December.

The deputy ministry of migration also reported that 20 individuals have requested the withdrawal of their refugee status, with about 200 Syrians applying each week to return home. This surge is likely to increase as the security situation in Syria improves.

Some Syrians are cautiously assessing the safety of their homeland by sending family members ahead. This prudent approach highlights the deep-rooted desire to reunite with their homeland after years of conflict and displacement.

With approximately 14,000 Syrian refugees holding legal subsidiary protection status in Cyprus, this exodus reflects their resilience and hope for a safer and more stable future. As Cyprus bids farewell to these resilient individuals, it remains to be seen how the region will adapt to these evolving dynamics.
