Poland’s first nuclear power plant is set to begin construction as early as December, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced Tuesday.
Tusk said Warsaw expects official confirmation from the European Commission approving state aid for the project. He added that full funding has been secured, totaling 60 billion zlotys ($16.5 billion), with the first 4.6 billion zlotys in treasury securities to be delivered this month.
The plant will be built in the Lubiatowo‑Kopalino area on the Baltic Sea coast and will include three units. State‑owned Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe will serve as investor and operator, while the American consortium Westinghouse‑Bechtel has been contracted to build the facility.
The first unit is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2036.
