A major police operation was launched Friday after multiple gunshots were fired outside a shopping center in southwest Sydney, authorities said.
New South Wales Police said emergency services were called to Gregory Hills, about 45 kilometers from central Sydney, at around 8:35 a.m. after reports of shots fired outside a gym. Officers found that several rounds had been fired at a man who left the scene.
Two males armed with firearms, dressed in black clothing and wearing face coverings, were seen nearby, police said. No injuries were reported.
Witnesses told Nine radio they heard up to 10 shots and saw members of the public sheltering in nearby businesses. A large police presence was deployed, a crime scene established, and investigations began.
