The Sovereign Base Areas Police are urging the public to take extra care on the roads and at the beach ahead of what is expected to be a very busy long weekend and Monday’s public holiday.
With more traffic on the motorways and larger crowds on the coast, police say the risk of road collisions and opportunistic beach crime increases.
Acting Superintendent Marcos Petrou, Deputy Divisional Commander in Dhekelia, said police patrols will be stepped up across both the eastern and western SBAs to help prevent accidents. “Public holidays always bring more people onto the roads, and with that comes a higher risk of collisions,” he said.
Petrou also warned beachgoers to protect their belongings. He said thefts from cars and valuables left unattended on the sand tend to rise at this time of year.
“Our advice is simple: avoid taking expensive items to the beach. If you must bring them, keep them locked in your car and out of sight,” he said. “A few basic precautions can help everyone enjoy the beaches safely.”
