FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – One crew member remains unaccounted for after an oil tanker and a cargo vessel collided in the North Sea, British media reported on Monday. The search has been called off.
A total of 36 people were rescued, with one person taken to hospital, according to Coastguard Divisional Commander Matthew Atkinson.
The collision near Hull involved the U.S.-registered oil tanker Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese-flagged container ship Solong.
Efforts to assess environmental damage are ongoing after jet fuel was confirmed to have leaked into the sea.
Several people reportedly abandoned the ships following the collision, with fires reported on both vessels, according to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
The Stena Immaculate, which had traveled from the Greek port of Agioi Theodoroi, was anchored outside Hull. The Solong had been sailing from the Scottish port of Grangemouth to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.
