DALLAS — Southwest Airlines will begin requiring passengers to remove detachable lithium batteries from powered wheelchairs and scooters before boarding, citing fire safety concerns.
The policy takes effect Sept. 25.
The airline said the change is part of a broader effort to reduce risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which have been linked to multiple onboard incidents. Additional size restrictions for batteries are expected to be announced in January.
The move follows recent warnings about battery-related hazards in aircraft cabins. Southwest said the new rules are intended to improve safety while maintaining accessibility for travelers who rely on mobility aids.
