The Council of Europe’s Committee of Experts has praised Cyprus for its financial support of Cypriot Maronite Arabic and Armenian.

The government provides funding for language learning, school infrastructure, and cultural institutions.

The report from June 2024 also highlights effective consultations between the government and language speakers. The Cypriot government has been working to raise awareness of Armenian and Maronite communities, their histories, cultures, and languages.

Western Armenian is taught at various education levels, with efforts to expand it to upper secondary levels.

However, the Committee raised concerns about Cypriot Maronite Arabic, which is “in danger of extinction” due to a lack of trained teachers. The language is currently only taught at the primary level with limited hours, and the report calls for urgent measures to preserve it.
