FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Sweden’s government intends to halve the value-added tax (VAT) on food from 12% to 6%, beginning April 1, 2026, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson told public broadcaster SVT this week.
The proposed reduction, which would remain in effect until 2028, is part of ongoing budget negotiations within Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s center-right coalition.
It remains unclear what will happen after the temporary measure expires.
Sources told SVT that the government plans to formally present the proposal in the near future.
The move is aimed at easing household costs amid persistent inflation and economic uncertainty.
