Syria will begin circulating a new national currency on Jan. 1, 2026, and start replacing the existing banknotes, Central Bank Governor Abdelkader al‑Hosri has confirmed.
Al‑Hosri said the transition will be “smooth and orderly,” with full details of the exchange mechanism to be explained clearly to the public.
He said the move follows Decree No. 293 of 2025, which authorizes the central bank to set deadlines and designate exchange centers.
The governor said implementing instructions will be issued soon, with an emphasis on facilitating procedures for citizens across all regions. He added that the central bank will remain open Dec. 25–27 to complete preparations.
Al‑Hosri described the new currency as a symbol of “financial sovereignty” and part of what he called a new economic phase. He said the bank will hold a press conference to outline the process and build public confidence.
Earlier this month, the central bank said it would announce full details once all technical and logistical arrangements were complete, stressing that banking services continue normally and without disruption.
