Athens International Airport is expected to close 2025 with a new passenger‑traffic record, reaching an estimated 34 million travelers, up from 31.9 million in 2024.

Outgoing CEO Yiannis Paraschis, incoming CEO Giorgos Kallimassias — who assumes the role on Feb. 1 — and Communications and Marketing Director Ioanna Papadopoulou told reporters at a holiday event that the airport’s performance reflects Greece’s broader post‑pandemic recovery and a sharp rise in travel by Greek residents.

“2025 has been a very strong year for Athens Airport,” Paraschis said, attributing the growth to the country’s overall momentum and increased mobility among Greek travelers. He said the airport is entering a new phase, supported by a major investment program and long‑term planning.

Kallimassias, who has been with the airport since 1999, said he is taking over an organization operating “at a very high level of excellence,” but one facing significant challenges — foremost among them the expansion of airport facilities.

A new parking structure has already been commissioned, and the next major step is the planned €1 billion expansion of the central terminal, scheduled for completion in 2032. Portions of the project will open gradually as construction progresses.
