TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan will not agree to produce 50% of its semiconductors in the United States, Vice Premier and chief trade negotiator Cheng Li-chiun said Tuesday, pushing back against pressure from Washington.
“This is the United States’ idea,” Cheng stated. “Our negotiators have never committed to a 50–50 split in chip production,” he added, stressing that Taiwan will not accept such a condition.
The remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the U.S. to encourage Taiwan to shift more of its advanced chip manufacturing to American soil, citing national security and supply chain resilience. Taiwan remains one of the world’s leading producers of semiconductors.
