FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE —Thyroid cancer diagnoses are on the rise in Cyprus, with the disease now ranked as the second most common cancer among women and the sixth most common among men, according to recent data.

The Cancer Patients and Friends Association issued a statement on May 25, marking World Thyroid Adenoma Day, revealing that newly diagnosed cases increased from 312 in 2021 (242 women, 70 men) to 416 in 2022 (305 women, 111 men).

The association underscored the growing trend and called for further investigation into potential contributing factors.

Experts emphasized the urgency of identifying causes behind the surge to improve early detection and minimize exposure to known risk factors.

Thyroid cancer is often linked to genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and exposure to radiation.

While survival rates are generally high with early diagnosis and treatment, medical professionals stress that understanding the specific drivers of this increase in Cyprus will be crucial for refining prevention strategies and public health responses.
