Joe Biden announced a few days before he left that he would remove Cuba from the list of countries that support terrorism. President Donald Trump has now reversed this.
Before he left office as president, Biden also announced that several other sanctions against Cuba would be removed or scaled back.
In return, Cuba was to release political prisoners, in line with an agreement brokered by the Catholic Church. The very next day, a number of prisoners were released, including people who participated in the historic anti-government protests of 2021.
Several of the sanctions were imposed by Trump during his previous term as president – and it was expected that they would be reimposed when he moved into the White House.
