FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — U.S. President Donald Trump has said Canada will need to pay $61 billion to join the planned Golden Dome missile defense system, a project designed to shield North America from aerial threats.
Trump has previously stated that Canada wants to be part of the initiative, which has an estimated total cost of $175 billion.
Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that his government is considering an investment in the project.
However, Trump has suggested that Canada could join the system for free—if it agrees to become the 51st U.S. state.
The Golden Dome system, modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, aims to provide multi-layered protection against ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
While discussions between the U.S. and Canada continue, no formal agreement has been reached.
