FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Turkish archaeologists have uncovered an eighth-century B.C. cremation tomb in the ancient city of Gordion, believed to belong to a king or high-ranking official.

The burial site, recorded as the 47th tumulus at Gordion, contained more than 100 valuable artifacts alongside cremated human remains. Experts say it is the oldest known cremation burial at the site, offering new insights into Phrygian funerary customs.

Professor Yücel Şenyurt, head of the excavation, said the dig began in September and was completed in four months. The team worked systematically within a 12-by-12-meter area, employing 15 workers and six archaeologists.

Artifacts from the tomb were unveiled at a ceremony at the Gordion Museum, attended by Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.
