FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat said Friday that Türkiye aims to negotiate with the United States to lift the 10 percent tariffs imposed on Turkish exports under a new U.S. trade policy.
Citing a $2.4 billion trade surplus in favor of the U.S. for 2024, Bolat expressed hope for discussions with the U.S. Department of Commerce and Trade Representative.
He noted that President Donald Trump has signaled a willingness to negotiate.
Bolat announced plans for a May visit to the U.S., where Turkish officials will address the tariff issue with their American counterparts.
In the meantime, Türkiye will focus on its “Distant Countries Strategy” to diversify export markets and attract investment.
The tariffs stem from an executive order signed Wednesday by Trump, introducing a 10 percent baseline tariff on all U.S. imports, with higher rates for certain nations.
