FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Türkiye’s wheat output is projected to reach 18.65 million tons this year, falling short of the long-term average of 20 million tons due to adverse climate conditions, the National Grain Council (UHK) estimates.
The decline is attributed to a severe March drought, followed by heavy rainfall and unusually low temperatures in early April.
Türkiye’s wheat planting area has expanded from 6.8 million hectares to 7.6 million hectares over the past three years, according to Anadolu Agency.
Despite the drop in production, Türkiye remains a major agricultural exporter. Addressing the Pre-Harvest Grain Congress in April, UHK Chairman Ozkan Taspinar noted that the country recorded a 5.4-billion-dollar trade surplus in agricultural exports last year.
Türkiye exported 8.5 million tons of wheat-equivalent finished products in 2024 while importing 4.5 million tons of wheat.
