FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the prospect of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is “near a point of no return,” as violence and political setbacks threaten its viability.

Addressing a UN Security Council debate on the Middle East, Guterres said lasting peace hinges on Israel and Palestine living side-by-side in security, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states. He cautioned that commitment to this vision has diminished and risks “dwindling to the point of disappearance.”

The situation has worsened since Hamas’ October 2023 terror attacks, Guterres said, citing devastation in Gaza, Israeli military operations in the West Bank, and increasing settler violence.

“The world cannot afford to watch the two-state solution disappear,” he said, urging leaders to act decisively to restore momentum.

Guterres criticized Israeli statements suggesting humanitarian aid could be used as military leverage, stressing that relief must flow unhindered, including support from UNRWA. He also called for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages.

The UN chief urged compliance with international law, reminding Israel of its responsibilities as an occupying power, including providing food and medical supplies and respecting humanitarian personnel.

Guterres called on UN member states to take “irreversible action” toward implementing a two-state solution and preventing perpetual occupation. He emphasized that the upcoming High-Level Conference in June, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, is an opportunity to galvanize international support for peace.

“Political courage and will are needed to achieve peace for Palestinians, Israelis, the region, and humanity,” he said.
