FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has discovered more than 225 concealed weapons caches south of the Litani River since November 2024, referring all findings to the Lebanese Armed Forces, the mission announced this week.
UNIFIL said its 10,000 peacekeepers continue to operate “in a neutral and professional manner” to monitor and report violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The mission emphasized its cooperation with the Lebanese military but noted that full deployment remains obstructed by the ongoing presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese soil.
A U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire has been in effect since November 2024, ending over a year of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel linked to the Gaza conflict. Despite the truce, Israel still occupies five hilltops along the Lebanese border and conducts occasional strikes targeting alleged Hezbollah threats.
UNIFIL, established in 1978, saw its mandate significantly expanded in 2006 to enhance truce monitoring and support the Lebanese government in asserting its authority in the south.
