Vilnius Airport resumed operations early Thursday after three overnight shutdowns triggered by balloons carrying contraband, the Baltic News Service reported.

Lithuania Airports said airspace reopened at 2:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) on Dec. 4 following restrictions that began Wednesday evening. Flights were halted three times since 7:36 p.m. (1736 GMT) after balloons crossed into Lithuanian airspace.

The closures disrupted 27 flights and affected about 3,100 passengers. Officials warned further delays were possible Thursday due to crew and aircraft rotations.

Authorities say smugglers using balloons to transport cigarettes have repeatedly forced temporary closures at Vilnius in recent months, and once at Kaunas Airport.
