Wolf kills 17 sheep in Denmark, situation now prompting an urgent need for regulation

Around 17 sheep have been killed by wolves near the town of Vemb, west of Jutland in Denmark.

According to Danish radio,  sheep were in an enclosure that was intended to be wolf-proof. This is the first time sheep have been killed inside such an enclosure in Denmark.

The wolf was extinct in Denmark for over 100 years, but is now making a comeback. Last summer, it was estimated that there were between 32 and 43 wolves in Denmark.

On Friday, Famagusta Gazette reported how the number of wolves had exceeded 20,000 in the EU, prompting an urgent need for regulation.

EU Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswal, has been made aware of the situation which is creating problems with wolf packs that are a nuisance to local communities, agriculture and hunters.

This has also been acknowledged by the EU Commission.

‘The number has justified an adjustment of the legal protection status, and that was the reason for the commission’s proposal last year to adjust the wolf’s status’, says Jessika Roswall.

Last year, the wolf’s protection status was downgraded in the so-called Bern Convention. The wolf’s status went from “strictly protected” to “protected”.
