1958 – Football fans stormed out of their seats to attack referee Yervant Chadjerian during a match between Apollon and Epa.
The game ended violently in the 77th minute with Epa leading 2-0.
Chadjerian was badly beaten and required first aid treatment in the dressing room before being smuggled out of the stadium. The attack occurred after Apollon, the home team, struggled gamely but unsuccessfully to reduce Epa’s two-goal lead.
A shot from Apollon appeared to be heading for a goal but was cleared after glancing off a side post. Home team supporters believed the ball had crossed the line.
However, Chadjerian ruled no goal, inciting hundreds of furious fans who stormed the field.
Epa players attempted to protect Chadjerian, but he received a severe beating.
Chadjerian had also been unpopular with fans during Saturday’s match in Nicosia between Omonia and Apoel, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Omonia.
Several of his decisions were met with discontent, although, on that occasion, the crowd limited their response to throwing bottles at him.
