UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed concern about the changes in policy that have occurred since Donald Trump became president.
He warns that divisive rhetoric is being used to deceive and polarize people.
“We have had bipartisan support from the United States on human rights for many decades. I am now deeply concerned about the fundamental shift in direction that is taking place both domestically and internationally,” Türk said.
He also highlighted that policies meant to protect people from discrimination are now being labeled as discriminatory.
Türk expressed concern over the backlash against gender equality and the increase in the use of disinformation and threats against journalists and public officials.
