1960: WELL, it happened… somebody thought of the bright, but illegal idea of Installing his own telephone without going through the channels of CyTA, the Island’s telecommunications authority.
It worked so well that several others anxious for an immediate installation or equally anxious to avoid paying rates, followed suit.
Now, Cyta has cracked down, trapped several red handed, and warned the public that under the law it may act against any culprit caught with an unauthorized telephone.
A statement said that unauthorized equipment had been obtained, installed and connected to the public system without the Authority’s knowledge.
Not only can this harm the existing system, it might also endanger life and property because most illegal installations are made by people unaccustomed to the work.
If you want a telephone, says CyTA, you must apply to them a writing. But don’t phone.
