1990: A court on a British base in Cyprus decided to hold Bashir Uddin Peracha, a Pakistani suspect, for extradition.
Peracha was accused of trafficking 14 kg (30 pounds) of heroin into Britain, allegedly sending it from Karachi in five shipments.
Arrested in Dhekelia after crossing from Turkish Cypriot-controlled north Cyprus, Peracha will be held until March 28 when the extradition request is heard.
The base’s status as a dependent British territory necessitated the extradition request. British customs officers had flown to Cyprus to interview Peracha.
