Cyprus Faces Decline in Camping Tourism as Sites Shut Down

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Organised camping sites across Cyprus are shutting down, with no plans for new public sites, the Movement of Ecologists-Citizens’ Cooperation has charged.

The Polis Chrysochous camping ground, a longtime popular destination, has been closed since 2023 while awaiting investors and redevelopment.

The Troodos campsite, the largest in mountainous Cyprus, is also shut and faces uncertainty over its summer operations.

“The remaining camping sites are either closed or overcrowded,” the group said, adding that unregulated luxury glamping is expanding while traditional camping declines.

The party noted that across Europe, camping is a key part of environmentally responsible tourism, contrasting sharply with Cyprus’s current approach.
