FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Perched at an altitude of 1,200m, Platres is the highest mountain community in Cyprus.

Once a popular health retreat for British colonialists and notable figures, the village has seamlessly blended its nostalgic charm with modern amenities, including upgraded restaurants and hotels.

Platres offers a perfect escape year-round. In summer, visitors enjoy its dry climate, tranquil scenery, and forested surroundings, while in winter, it transforms into a cosy ski resort with roaring log fires and inviting eateries. Modeled after colonial hill stations, Platres boasts forest walks, bubbling streams, and the cooling respite of mountain air—paired, of course, with gin and tonics on hotel balconies.

Activities Hiking enthusiasts can explore several scenic trails, including:

  • A 9km downhill route to Foini.
  • A 7km path to Perapedhi.
  • A 3km uphill trek to Pouziaris.

Dining Relish local Cypriot dishes paired with excellent wines from the nearby Krasohoria and Commandaria regions.

Most restaurants and bars are conveniently located on the village’s lower road, offering a variety of delectable options to savor after a day of exploration.
