FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Department of Antiquities has concluded the first excavation season at Amathous-West Terrace, a site under investigation since the 1960s.
The project, launched in April 2025, is a collaboration between the French School at Athens, France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Laboratoire HiSoMA in Lyon, directed by Dr. Anna Cannavò.
Previous excavations in the 1970s uncovered a large limestone wall, believed to be a terrace or fortification, along with substantial deposits of pottery and figurines. The new study aims to assess the nature of the terrace and the possible presence of structures tied to earlier findings.
Researchers opened two trenches, revealing collapsed walls, pottery fragments, terracotta figurines, and roof tiles dating from the Archaic to Late Antique periods. Initial conclusions suggest habitation during Late Antiquity, but deeper levels may contain older structures and Iron Age artifacts.
Further excavation is planned to fully expose the collapsed structure and determine its historical significance.
