FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A large wildfire raging out of control since midday in the village of Mallia, Limassol district, has prompted the evacuation of two communities.
Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis and Fire Chief Nikos Longinos are reportedly on site as emergency crews battle the blaze. The Fire Service has activated its “Ikaros II” response plan, deploying 10 fire engines and six aircraft.
Flames have damaged homes and vehicles, while firefighters, assisted by Civil Defence and police, have helped residents evacuate the area.
Cyprus remains gripped by a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring and the risk of heat stress rising sharply.
Meteorologist Iasonas Christodoulou told CyBC – the state broadcaster – that Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the year, with highs possibly reaching 45°C and remaining elevated through Monday.
Nighttime temperatures are also forecast to stay unusually high, climbing to 26°C.
