FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus’s electricity system is under pressure as demand hits critical levels amid limited operating margins.
According to Transmission System Operator spokesperson Chara Koushiappa, conventional generation capacity peaked at 1,122 megawatts, while midday demand was expected to reach 1,200 megawatts.
More than half of daytime demand was met by renewable sources, helping avoid disruptions. However, between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m., demand remains high and relies almost entirely on conventional power.
Last night’s consumption reached 929 megawatts, with tonight’s forecast nearing 1,000. Authorities urged consumers to limit unnecessary energy use to prevent rolling blackouts.
