Organised ‘arson network’ could be behind deadly Cyprus fires

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Authorities are investigating a possible organized arson network following new reports and evidence of deliberate fire-setting in the Orounta region, according to Deputy Fire Chief Nikos Longinos.

Three separate fires broke out simultaneously Saturday afternoon in Paphos, within 200 meters of each other, near the communities of Nikokleia, Fasoula, and Stavrokonnou. Officials say the proximity and timing raise strong suspicions of malicious intent.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the blazes scorched approximately 2.5 hectares of wild vegetation and dry grass.

Police and fire officials are urging the public to report any information or suspicious activity that may be linked to arson.

Meanwhile, surveys show the deadly wildfire that burned for more than two days in the mountainous region of Limassol caused extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and the environment.

Initial surveys show 229 homes either destroyed or heavily damaged across at least 15 communities, according to local authorities. The extent of damage to livestock, vehicles, and other property remains unknown.

Teams from the District Administration continued assessing the area Sunday and are expected to finish by Tuesday. In several cases, owners of burned properties have yet to be located.
